These narratives are more important than ever as ongoing challenges to HIV research and prevention threaten the significant progress of recent decades.

Number of Pages: 72

Dimensions: 0.15 x 8.5 x 5.5 IN

Publication Date: October 16, 2025

Report copyright infringement

by Kevin Anderson (Author)

My Thoughts are the actions and inactions of my heart and my mind. Through varied poetic forms, the work explores the struggles of individuals seeking meaning in a world often marked by hardship and uncertainty. The opening pieces establish a somber tone, contemplating loneliness, societal distance, and the personal battles hidden beneath outward appearances. The titular poem reflects on lives enveloped in figurative darkness, while other pieces expose the fragile intersection between perception and reality, highlighting the profound ironies of existence. Vivid imagery and rhythmic precision invite readers into a deeply introspective space, where fleeting joys are tempered by enduring sorrow. The collection captures the persistent tension between hope and despair, light and shadow, encouraging thoughtful engagement with the complexities of life. To restrain him, the gods created Enkidu, a wild man, almost his equal. After a tense struggle, Gilgamesh eventually triumphs. They emerge with mutual admiration and a deep friendship. Together, they defeat Humbaba, the terror of humanity and the guardian of the cedar forest, and even the bull of heaven. The gods decree that Enkidu must die, in shame, of illness, not in battle. This is the turning point. Gilgamesh, face to face with mortality, terrified for the first time in his life, embarks on a solo quest for immortality. Failing, he returns having gained precious life wisdom.

The epic embodies the universal themes of literature: the hero's quest, the power of friendship, the nature of true greatness, the inevitability of death, and the search for lasting meaning. These books were extremely ornate, using rich colors, gold bindings, artful calligraphy, and highly emblematic covers. Among those emblems were, not surprisingly, drawings of the four evangelists whose Gospels were to be read, cathedrals, crosses and Marian symbols, and even portraits of princes who sponsored and donated these beautiful books. The practice of preparing these books dates back to the fourth century and reached its artistic peak in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. These holy books of the Gospels inspired this present book of poems, each of which is anchored in or alludes to a Biblical image, figure, parable, place, or trope.

Number of Pages: 112

Dimensions: 0.44 x 9 x 6 IN

Publication Date: November 16, 2024

Report copyright infringement

by David A. These poem-centered poems manage their extended metaphors freshly and with great skill, they are warmed by humor and gentle self-mockery, and they have much wisdom to offer anyone who, like this writer, has loved poetry all his life, alongside work and family and nature's consoling cycles of dormancy and regeneration. Dr. Guertin and Betsy Wilkening have been creating fascinating exhibits at the Annual Geophysical Union meetings since 2021, which combine their love of fiber art with science. Their goal has been to educate, amuse, and inform the public about topics of scientific interest, and to raise awareness about global warming, climate change, environmental threats, and other changes to our planet, as well as some possible solutions. The first year focused on fiber art quilt creations, and since 2022, entries have expanded to include other forms of fiber art.

In 2024, I suggested that we create a multimodal ekphrastic project, pairing fiber art with poetry. Several poems were made in time for the December 2024 American Geophysical Union exhibit to pair with fiber art. Throughout 2024 and early 2025, we accepted more submissions to create this book. Thus, some of the artwork in this book, added after the conference, takes the form of drawings, paintings, and even art in museums. However, each artwork accepted for the book was carefully chosen to fit with the theme to explore "making the unseen, seen" and to link science and art through poetry.

The reader is strongly encouraged to read the Artist/Scientist Statements at the back of the book. They are wonderfully illuminating, and even non-scientists can learn from the brief explanations that accompany the thoughtful poems, which cover topics that concern us all, through the use of colorful illustrations.

It has been a joy and a deeply satisfying challenge to match these poems with artists to create this book. In this version of literary history, free verse saved poetry from cultural irrelevance and marked a broadly oppositional politics. This book tells a different story--and offers a radically new account of the rise of free verse poetry in the United States.

In the 1910s, white academics, editors, and critics popularized free verse by arguing that it was the formal expression of a white American race. For Black and Indigenous authors, free verse did not reliably function as a break or an opening; it was instead a form of enclosure and used to shore up racial hierarchies. The story of the racialization of free verse has been consistently edited out of accounts of modernism--especially those that focus on how free verse was promoted in storied little magazines such as Poetry and Others. In The Enclosures of Free Verse, Erin Joyce Kappeler returns to those magazines and their associated anthologies to show that free verse was a racial formation of whiteness and to explore how Black and Indigenous poets navigated this racialization of poetic form.

Author Biography

Erin Joyce Kappeler is an instructional designer, scholar of modernist poetry and poetics, and author.

Number of Pages: 210

Dimensions: 0.48 x 9.21 x 6.14 IN

Publication Date: February 24, 2026

Report copyright infringement

by Nègès Mawon (Developed by), Fania Noël (Editor), Corine Bond (Illustrator)

This sixth issue of Alaso: Martyr

Martyr, the word gracing this sixth issue of ALASO, is a word used in everyday language to refer to a defenseless victim. However, here we employ it in its political context. The "martyr" theme partially derives from liberation theology-one can't help but think of the martyrdom of Jesus-but also from decolonial and Third World liberation movements. The point here is not to be hyperbolic, lest we fall into what Hortense Spillers describes as a pornotrope. In these pages, we deploy "martyr" as an analytical framework through which to see the lives made indispensable by capitalist, patriarchal, and supremacist exploitation, but also their resistance, their connection to the land, and their relationship with it-all fiercely opposed by this system. This issue inaugurates our new rubric, Menm Nou Menm Lan (We Remain), where we welcome contributions from Black feminists from other countries. We felt it was essential that the first contribution come from Sudan. The Noon Collective, a Sudanese feminist collective, offers a perspective on the war in Sudan and its links to global policies of exploitation, militarization, and anti-Black racism. As in Haiti and the Congo, Sudanese women's bodies are a site of ongoing genocide.

Contributions by Katiana Altine, Ana Belique, Emma Clesca, Stéphana Dorval, Vanessa Jeudi, Danièle Magloire, Eiman Omer and Wyddiane Prophète

Translation: Gaëlle Bien-Aimé, Nathalie Cerin, Anne-Doris Lapommeray, Nadine Mondestin

Illustrations: Corine Bond

Publication director: Fania Noël

Editorial assistant: Dashka-Rheyna Charlemagne and Anaïse Hector

Number of Pages: 78

Dimensions: 0.16 x 8.27 x 5.83 IN

Publication Date: November 18, 2025

Report copyright infringement

by Wt Cammer (Author)

It's not an easy life, being on the road, traveling from east coast to west coast, chasing jobs and the all-mighty dollar-but it's a compelling one.
