Carter Carver is a young boy who is good at a lot of things, but the concept of colors has him stumped. While his classmates recognize colors by sight, Carter has mastered guessing and using clues, hints, and memorized associations. His way works for him, but he feels that his classmates will eventually discover that he is only guessing. When they do, he is certain that they will tease and laugh at him. So, even though Carter loves school and his teacher, he decides that there is only one way to avoid the inevitable humiliation. He has to convince his mother to allow him to stay home and learn from there. Fortunately, his mother comes up with a better idea.
